Let’s Talk About Aging, Living & Dying
A small-group exploration with a practical take-away
Facilitated by Jo Anne Smith & Lynn Rogers, PhD
Online series: January 10, 17, 24 & 31, 2024 — 12:30 - 2 pm CT
In-person in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico: February 21 & 28 — 12 - 2 pm CT
In our modern society, most of us tend to avoid discussions about aging and end-of-life issues — until they become urgent concerns that demand immediate attention. Then we may find ourselves blindsided and overwhelmed.
We generally tiptoe around these almost taboo topics — perhaps from the discomfort that comes with acknowledging our own mortality. But by avoiding these conversations, we miss out on the opportunity to be prepared, both emotionally and practically, for the inevitable. Engaging in thoughtful discussions about aging, dying and death allows us to make informed decisions about our healthcare and finances, express our wishes, and support our loved ones through difficult times. These meaningful explorations enable us to lean on our support network, and hopefully experience a sense of control and peace when the time comes.
During these interactive small-group sessions, we will explore how to live well as we age while planning for the end. The topics covered may include but are not limited to:
Navigating the physical and emotional changes that accompany the aging process
Identifying and understanding the challenges and opportunities that arise as we age
Exploring our beliefs, fears and wishes surrounding dying and death
Reviewing end-of-life planning and the importance of uncomfortable conversations now in ensuring our wishes are respected later
Beginning or continuing to compile the practical information our loved ones or executors will need when the time comes, using a recommended planner as a guide. Because most of us have only partially completed this project, or have put it off altogether, we will include an accountability element (for those who wish) to help each other stay on track.
Our intention is to create a welcoming and supportive environment where everyone feels comfortable sharing their thoughts, concerns, and experiences. Together, we find the knowledge, wisdom, resources and insights that empower one another as we navigate the path of aging.
